    Nagakute Ghibli Park

Living my Ghibli Dreams at Ghibli Park

If you’re a Studio Ghibli fan, visiting Ghibli Park in Nagakute is nothing short of magical. From the moment we started our journey, it was clear that this wasn’t just any theme park — it’s a carefully designed space that brings Ghibli’s world to life in the most charming way.

    tldr video

A Ghibli Welcome at Fujigaoka Station

Before even reaching the park, the magic begins at Fujigaoka Station. This station is important because most people traveling from Nagoya Station will first take the Higashiyama Subway Line to Fujigaoka, then transfer to the Linimo line that goes directly to Ghibli Park. While Fujigaoka isn’t the park’s station, it’s the main transfer point — and it already sets the mood for the visit. The station is decorated with Ghibli media, instantly letting us know we were on the right track. It felt so cute and welcoming — almost like stepping into a storybook before the adventure even began.

The actual station for Ghibli Park is Aichikyūhaku-Kinen-Kōen Station on the Linimo line, just a short walk from the entrance.

    Ticketing System – Plan Ahead!

A key thing to note: tickets are released exactly two months in advance. You can’t book too early, and waiting too long means they might sell out. Not every attraction requires a ticket though — so even if you don’t manage to secure one for the main facilities, you can still enjoy the public areas and free attractions.

    A Lawson Like No Other

Upon entering Ghibli Park, the first thing that caught our eye was the special Lawson convenience store. Unlike regular Lawson stores across Japan, this one sells unique Ghibli-themed items — making it an attraction of its own!

It’s also a great chance to stock up on snacks and drinks before exploring, since the park is spread out and you’ll be doing quite a bit of walking. Having a drink or light snack on hand makes the long strolls between attractions much more enjoyable.

    Spacious Grounds and Themed Areas

One of the best things about Ghibli Park is how spacious it feels. Unlike many packed theme parks, the attractions are spread across a wide area, making it enjoyable to stroll, explore, and take in the scenery. Each zone captures the heart of different Ghibli classics.

    Attractions to Explore

Ghibli Park is divided into several themed areas, each inspired by the films:

    • Ghibli’s Grand Warehouse – indoor exhibitions, film sets, and character displays.
    • Hill of Youth – featuring the World Emporium from Whisper of the Heart.
    • Dondoko Forest – Totoro-themed with the life-sized Satsuki and Mei’s House.
    • Mononoke Village – inspired by Princess Mononoke (with statues of creatures and rustic settings).
    • Valley of Witches – the newest area, bringing Howl’s Moving Castle and Kiki’s Delivery Service to life.

Even if you don’t enter every zone, just walking through them feels like living in a Ghibli film.

    The Adorable Catbus Transport

Inside the park, the transport design is another highlight — the Catbus from My Neighbor Totoro! Seeing the Catbus turned into a practical yet whimsical mode of transport was an absolute delight.

    Food and Rest Areas

There are designated food stalls and rest areas throughout the park, perfect for recharging in between exploring. Whether it’s grabbing themed snacks or simply sitting down to enjoy the atmosphere, it felt well thought out for visitors.

    Ending with Souvenirs

Like any true Ghibli experience, the journey wouldn’t be complete without a stop at the souvenir store. From plushies and postcards to beautifully designed collectibles, it was the perfect way to wrap up our day and take a piece of Ghibli magic home.

    A Day of Ghibli Magic

Ghibli Park isn’t about flashy rides — it’s about immersion into the Ghibli universe. From Fujigaoka Station to the Catbus rides and the charming souvenir store, everything felt thoughtfully designed. If you’re a Ghibli fan planning a trip to Japan, Nagakute’s Ghibli Park is an absolute must-visit.

  • Asakusa Sensō-ji

    Asakusa Sensō-ji

Exploring Sensō-ji: Tokyo’s Most Famous Temple in Asakusa

When people think of Asakusa, the first landmark that comes to mind is undoubtedly Sensō-ji. What struck me as truly charming was how the entire Asakusa area seems to revolve around this temple. From the moment I stepped out of the station, I could already feel the temple’s presence — the shops, the streets, and the atmosphere were all tied to Sensō-ji.

    tldr video

Nakamise Street – The Pathway to Sensō-ji

One of the highlights of visiting Sensō-ji is walking through Nakamise Shopping Street, the bustling approach that leads directly to the temple grounds. It’s filled with a wide variety of shops:

    • Street food stalls offering Japanese snacks like ningyo-yaki (small red bean cakes) and freshly grilled senbei (rice crackers).
    • Souvenir stores selling yukata, folding fans, and traditional trinkets.
    • Local specialty shops that give you a taste of old Tokyo charm.

The lively atmosphere makes it more than just a walk — it feels like a journey that builds anticipation as you get closer to the temple.

    The Beauty of Sensō-ji’s Architecture

Sensō-ji itself is breathtaking. The grand entrance gates, the main hall, and the towering five-story pagoda create a picture-perfect view of traditional Japanese architecture. Seeing the pagoda standing alongside the temple adds a sense of harmony and balance that makes the whole site visually striking.

Temple Activities – More Than Just Sightseeing

What makes Sensō-ji more engaging is that it’s not just a place to look at — there are many activities you can participate in:

    • Drawing an omikuji fortune slip (with a fun ritual if you get a bad fortune).
    • Purchasing an omamori (charm) for good luck, love, health, or studies.
    • Lighting incense sticks at the large burner in front of the temple and offering prayers.

Each of these experiences allows you to connect with the temple beyond its historical significance.here was always something fun around every corner.

    Inside the Main Hall

The interior of the temple is just as impressive as the exterior. With intricate wooden carvings, golden details, and traditional artwork, the main hall has a warm yet majestic atmosphere. Even though it can get crowded, it’s worth taking a moment to slow down and admire the craftsmanship.

    Goshuin – A Beautiful Memory

For those who enjoy collecting temple stamps, Sensō-ji also offers goshuin (temple calligraphy). Watching the monks carefully brush the elegant characters into the goshuin book feels like witnessing living art. It’s not only a spiritual keepsake but also a beautiful way to remember your visit.

    The Heart of Asakusa

Sensō-ji isn’t just Tokyo’s oldest and most famous Buddhist temple — it’s the heart of Asakusa. From the shopping streets to the temple grounds, from the towering pagoda to the quiet rituals inside, the entire experience feels both lively and deeply cultural. Whether you’re there for the history, the atmosphere, or the activities, Sensō-ji captures the essence of old Tokyo in the middle of a modern city.

  • Asakusa Hanayashiki

    Asakusa Hanayashiki

Step into Asakusa Hanayashiki – Japan’s oldest amusement park

If you’re exploring Tokyo’s historic Asakusa district, chances are you’ll visit the iconic Sensoji Temple. But just a short walk away, tucked behind the lively streets, lies a hidden gem that often surprises first-time visitors – Asakusa Hanayashiki, Japan’s oldest amusement park.

    tldr video

    A Glimpse into History

Asakusa Hanayashiki first opened its doors in 1853, the same year Japan ended its long isolation and reconnected with the world. What began as a flower park gradually evolved into a full-fledged amusement park. Today, it proudly carries more than 170 years of history, preserving a nostalgic charm that feels worlds apart from Tokyo’s modern mega-attractions.

    Nostalgic Japanese Aesthetics

One of the things I loved most about Hanayashiki is its retro design. The park feels like stepping back in time, with vintage-style signboards, classic rides, and a layout that reflects an earlier era of Japan. The aesthetics give it a cozy and almost nostalgic atmosphere – a stark contrast to the futuristic vibe of Tokyo Disneyland or teamLab exhibitions.

Entertainment Packed in a Compact Space

Despite being relatively small, Hanayashiki makes the most out of its limited space. You’ll find a wide variety of entertainment here:

    • Rides ranging from a mini roller coaster to a small Ferris wheel.
    • Carnival-style games that bring out your inner child.
    • Food stalls and snack counters serving both Japanese treats and amusement park classics.

What impressed me most was how everything felt so well integrated – no area felt wasted, and there was always something fun around every corner.

    Tickets with a Souvenir Twist

Instead of digital passes or wristbands, Hanayashiki still uses ride and meal tickets. They have a charming retro feel, and honestly, I thought they would make great souvenirs. Unfortunately, you do need to hand them over to the staff when using them – so unless you buy extras, you won’t get to keep them.

One thing to note: the ride tickets aren’t exactly cheap, so costs can add up if you’re planning to try multiple attractions.

Also, there is an entrance fee to enter the amusement park before these costs.

A Little Extra Memory – Custom Coin Making

Another highlight of the park is the custom coin machine, where you can engrave a personalized coin to commemorate your visit. It’s a simple but delightful way to bring home a piece of Hanayashiki. I still think it’s one of the more unique keepsakes compared to the usual keychains and magnets.

    Final Thoughts

Asakusa Hanayashiki may not be the biggest or most modern theme park in Tokyo, but that’s exactly its charm. It blends history, nostalgia, and fun entertainment into a compact yet memorable experience. If you’re already visiting Sensoji Temple, it’s well worth taking a short stroll over to step into a different side of Tokyo’s cultural past.

  • How TheShareCo Came To Be

    How TheShareCo Came To Be

The Journey of TheShareCo Before It Became Singapore’s Largest Online On-Demand Therapist Network

Behind every impactful company is a story of purpose, grit, and evolution. TheShareCo, today recognized as Singapore’s largest online on-demand therapist network, didn’t start in the mental health space. Instead, it began with one man’s lifelong obsession: solving problems that matter.

Meet Han Sing, the Problem Solver

Han Sing (on the right) preparing to talk at an event jointly organised by EDB, Enterprise Singapore and Quest Ventures, in HCMC, Vietnam.

Tan Han Sing, the founder of TheShareCo- graduated from NUS in 1996 with a degree in Microbiology and Biochemistry. While his background was in science, his passion lay elsewhere — identifying problems in society and creating solutions for them. To him, the impact of his work has always mattered more than just dollars and cents.

Over the years, Han Sing’s entrepreneurial journey has seen him tackle wide-ranging issues, from digital piracy to education inequality, and now, mental health. At the heart of it all is a belief: businesses can — and should — create meaningful, positive change.

    The Early Days: Software Exchange

Pirated CDs of movies and TV shows being sold at pasar malams (AI generated image)

In the late 1990s, piracy was rampant in Singapore. Pasar malams (Malay, for night market) openly sold pirated CDs; cracked software versions of popular applications like Microsoft Office were the norm. For Han Sing, this wasn’t just about copyright infringement. It was about the developers, creators, and businesses losing their livelihoods.

In 1999, he founded Software Exchange, a platform that bought and sold second-hand software licenses. For example, users who upgraded from Microsoft Office 97 to 2000 could sell the older licenses to Software Exchange. They would then resell these licenses at affordable prices. This model gave consumers access to legitimate software without resorting to piracy, while also supporting the larger software ecosystem by promoting lawful usage.

By 2014, Software Exchange had grown into one of Microsoft’s, Adobe’s and Symantec’s top managed partners, with presence in Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam. Han Sing eventually sold the business, having successfully turned a simple idea into a sustainable force against piracy.

    Bridging the Education Gap: Tueetor

In 2008, as financial crises swept through the world, Han Sing noticed another troubling trend: people losing jobs and children losing access to education. His inspiration to tackle this came from two personal encounters.

One was a single mother struggling to afford tuition for her son. Another was a parent unable to find suitable education for his child with autism. Both stories struck a chord with Han Sing. Using the funds from Software Exchange, he founded Tueetor, an online platform connecting learners with trainers across a wide variety of courses — from academics to unconventional skills like running.

Tueetor aimed to make education affordable and accessible while creating jobs for trainers. Some classes were offered for as low as $1 per session. From 2016 to 2022, Han Sing expanded Tueetor into markets like Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia — regions where he believed the platform could have an even bigger impact by providing opportunities to communities often overlooked.

The Pivot to Mental Health: The Birth of TheShareCo

In 2020, as COVID-19 reshaped the world, Han Sing noticed a new, pressing issue: mental health. Lockdowns exacerbated tensions at home, isolation fueled anxiety, and mental health crises surged — sometimes with fatal consequences.

While education was important, he realized the inability to find someone timely, quality mental health support, could carry consequences far serious than education. That could cost lives. Suicide rates during the pandemic only reaffirmed this painful truth.

Tan Han Sing pitching on stage during InnoVEX 2025 in Taipei, where TheShareCo was nominated for the ANN Global Startup Award

Determined to address this gap, Han Sing founded TheShareCo — a platform designed to make mental health support more accessible, sustainable, and impactful. Through TheShareCo, he sought to fix what other startups overlooked. Many focused solely on providing clients with quick, affordable access to therapists, but few considered the therapists’ needs or the role of counselling schools in shaping future mental health professionals.

Han Sing believed mental health services are built on a three-stakeholder ecosystem: clients, therapists, and counselling schools. TheShareCo was purpose-built to serve all three.

A 3-Stakeholder Ecosystem: Clients, Therapists, Counselling Schools

Han Sing knew something others overlooked — clients stay loyal to their therapists, not platforms. If therapists are under-served or unhappy, they leave, and clients follow. So TheShareCo wasn’t built just for clients. It was designed for therapists too.

Screenshots taken from a promotional video depicting an online therapy session on Share app

The platform offers therapists an integrated suite of tools: secure video calls, session transcription, HIPAA-compliant records, and more. These tools make their work easier and more effective, allowing them to focus on what matters — helping people.

For clients, TheShareCo offers 24/7 access to therapists around the world, ensuring that help is always available, regardless of timezone.

For counselling schools, TheShareCo provides its platform and tools to support counseling education, enabling students to train with real-world tools as part of their practicum.

    Impact at Its Core

One of the stories that fuels Han Sing’s mission is deeply personal.

A Primary 5 student (just 11 years old) reached out, seeking counseling. Han Sing arranged a pro-bono session through a friend. The student, it turned out, was battling suicidal thoughts. That single session helped change the student’s course. Afterward, the student asked if her friend could also get help. Both young lives were touched — perhaps even saved.

For Han Sing, moments like this aren’t just validation — they are the reason TheShareCo exists. It’s not about profit. It’s about people.

    TheShareCo Today

What started as a fight against piracy evolved into a platform making education accessible. Today, it’s a movement dedicated to breaking barriers to mental health care. Through TheShareCo, Han Sing continues to do what he’s always done: identify meaningful problems and solve them — with impact, not just income, as the end goal.

Han Sing also invites like-minded individuals to join him in his quest to save more lives together. So, whether you are an investor, a therapist, or a VWO/NPO, get in touch!

  • Singapore’s First 30-Minute Muay Thai HIIT Studio

Singapore’s First 30-Minute Muay Thai HIIT Studio

Inside MT30: More Than Just a Muay Thai Workout

    Getting to Know MT30’s Founders

Ben (on the left), Terrence (on the right) at the front desk of MT30

Recently, I had the opportunity to speak with Ben, one of the co-founders of MT30, and walked away with a whole new appreciation for what it takes to run a modern fitness business. Behind every punch and every kick at MT30 is a story of grit, purpose, and passion — and it all starts with its founders.

Ben and his co-founder, Terrance, go way back — all the way to their polytechnic days where their shared interest in Muay Thai first began. After graduation, their paths diverged: Ben became an air steward, while Terrance took the leap to pursue Muay Thai as a full-time career.

Years later in 2022, fate brought them back together when Terrance reached out to Ben with a bold idea — to start a fitness business built on their shared roots in Muay Thai. That idea became MT30.

    What Is MT30?

MT30 stands for Muay Thai 30 — a high-intensity, 30-minute workout that combines the explosive movements of Muay Thai and kickboxing with the fast-paced structure of HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training). But MT30 is more than just another boutique fitness class. It’s a thoughtfully designed fitness experience anchored on three core pillars:

    • Efficiency – With each session lasting just 30 minutes, MT30 is ideal for busy individuals like working professionals or parents who struggle to find time for a workout.
    • Fitness – Participants consistently see real, tangible results — both aesthetic and functional.
    • Mental Wellness – Beyond the physical, MT30 provides a safe space for people to de-stress, clear their minds, and build confidence.

The Inspiration: A Modern Take on Fitness

Ben shared that he conducted extensive R&D before launching MT30. He looked at local fitness trends — spin classes and programs like F45 were booming — and realized there was a demand for short, impactful workouts.

So, together with Terrance, they set out to create something unique. By fusing their background in Muay Thai with the efficiency of HIIT, they crafted a program that offers a full-body experience in just 30 minutes. It’s not just a workout — it’s an experience.

    A Deliberately Designed Experience

MT30’s attention to detail is remarkable, from the studio ambiance to the flow of each session:

    • Dark Studio & Loud Music:
Inspired by the energy of spin studios, MT30 sessions are conducted in ambiently lit room with loud music — not just for the vibes, but to help participants tune out distractions and focus fully on their training. This also benefits those who may feel self-conscious, offering them a sense of anonymity and comfort.
    • Grounded Bags:
Unlike traditional hanging punching bags, MT30 uses grounded bags that offer better resistance and feedback. These bags are more stable, eliminating the swing-back effect and mimicking the feel of hitting a real target.
    • Flow-Oriented Training:
From the moment participants enter — slipping off their shoes, getting assigned a bag, training, and exiting — everything is choreographed. There’s even a welcome video that guides first-timers through the process, ensuring a smooth experience for all.

    What Sets MT30 Apart

One of the things that immediately stood out in my conversation with Ben was how intentionally different MT30 is from your typical fitness studio. Cleanliness, safety, and professionalism aren’t just values — they are the foundation of everything they do.

Hygiene, for instance, is treated with utmost importance. After every session, participants are encouraged to wipe down their punching bags. This culture of shared responsibility, combined with MT30’s strict sanitation practices, ensures that the studio remains fresh and odor-free — a refreshing contrast to many gyms where cleanliness can often be overlooked.

MT30 is also uncompromising when it comes to creating a safe and respectful environment. The team does not adhere to the traditional notion that “the customer is always right” — especially when inappropriate behavior is involved. Whether it’s from staff or participants, misconduct is never tolerated. As Ben put it, “We do not compromise peace for profits.” He shared that there have been instances where they had to address unruly behavior directly, even if it meant risking a paying customer. For MT30, maintaining a high-quality experience for the entire community always comes first.

Finally, the coaching at MT30 sets a high standard. Trainers are not only technically skilled, but they are also deeply committed to helping participants get the most out of each session. They strike a thoughtful balance between pushing individuals beyond their comfort zones and ensuring they remain within safe physical limits. It’s this combination of professional conduct and genuine care that makes the MT30 experience so impactful.

    Stories from the Studio

Before we ended our conversation, Ben shared a story that encapsulated the MT30 spirit. There was a participant who laid down mid-session, seemingly giving up. Ben didn’t ignore it — instead, he went over, encouraged the participant, and reminded him why he was there.

Ben explained, “You’ve paid for this session, and I’ve accepted your payment. It’s my duty to ensure you get what you came for.” His commitment to pushing people out of their comfort zones — with care and respect — is at the heart of MT30.

    Take the First Swing

MT30 is a game-changer for anyone looking for a time-efficient, results-driven, and mentally rewarding workout. It’s also a place to connect — not just with your fitness goals, but with a community of like-minded individuals who share the same hustle.

If you’re looking for a space that prioritizes quality, safety, and transformation, MT30 might just be the place for you.

  • From Classroom to Code: How Practicle is Transforming Math Education

From Classroom to Code: How Practicle is Transforming Math Education

    From Lecturer to Entrepreneur

Meet Chong Ming (and his spouse who co-founded Practicle)

Chong Ming (on the left), and his spouse (on the right)

Chong Ming’s journey into entrepreneurship began in the classroom. As a lecturer at Temasek Polytechnic under the Ministry of Education (MOE), he dedicated years to shaping young minds.

However, over time, he realized that his reach was limited—he could only impact a finite number of students within the confines of a physical classroom. Determined to make a broader difference, he and his wife took a bold step: they left the public education sector to build a solution that could help students beyond the traditional classroom setting.

This decision led to the birth of Practicle, a digital education platform revolutionizing the way students learn mathematics.

A Passion for Teaching and Innovation

Chong Ming and one of his top student

Chong Ming’s passion for teaching didn’t wane when he left his lecturing position; instead, it found a new avenue through Practicle.

He saw firsthand the struggles that students faced with traditional learning methods, particularly in mathematics.

Inspired by assessment books that students relied on for extra practice, he envisioned a more effective way to reinforce learning—one that eliminated the need for flipping through pages and writing on paper while still strengthening critical thinking skills.

Revolutionizing Education Through AI and Gamification

    Screenshot of Practicle application

Practicle started as a simple digital version of assessment books, but it quickly evolved into something much more powerful.

By integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI), the platform could track a student’s learning progress and generate personalized questions tailored to their individual needs.

The AI ensured that each student was challenged at just the right level—difficult enough to promote growth but not so hard that it became a source of stress.

One of Practicle’s first success stories was a primary school student who disliked tuition.

His mother, hesitant but hopeful, subscribed to Practicle to give her child an alternative learning method. After consistent practice, the student walked into his exam feeling confident. To his mother’s surprise, he improved from a 68/100 to over 90/100. This experience highlighted the platform’s potential in transforming math education and making learning engaging.

    The Science Behind Gamifying Learning

Gamification is a key component of Practicle, but it was far from a simple process. Chong Ming and his team had to go beyond just adding points, leaderboards, and character levels—they needed to ensure that the gamification elements enhanced learning without causing discouragement or addiction.

Balancing Competitiveness with Fairness: While a leaderboard and duel system encouraged competition, Chong Ming recognized that weaker students might feel demotivated if they consistently ranked at the bottom. To counter this, Practicle implemented a leveling system where students could progress at their own pace. For instance, an advanced student could earn 15 points by solving five Level 3 questions, while another student could earn the same amount by solving fifteen Level 1 questions. This design encouraged weaker students to keep practicing until they were confident enough to attempt harder questions.

Preventing Overuse and Burnout: A major challenge in gamification is preventing students from spending excessive hours on the platform just to level up. Research led Chong Ming to implement daily quests that provided adequate rewards while discouraging excessive grinding. These quests were designed to take 15 to 30 minutes to complete, ensuring that students received enough practice without overworking themselves.

Staying Ahead of the Players: Students are naturally creative when it comes to finding shortcuts. Some quickly discovered bugs that allowed them to repeat questions to earn rewards faster. This kept Chong Ming on his toes, continuously improving the system to maintain fairness and integrity in learning.

    The Impact of Digital Education

Practicle has proven to be a game-changer for both students and parents.

The platform’s AI-driven personalized learning, coupled with gamification, has made mathematics more engaging and effective. Unlike traditional tuition, which can feel rigid and stressful, Practicle allows students to learn at their own pace, building confidence as they go.

Parents, too, have come to appreciate how the platform supports their children’s educational journey without the need for excessive drilling or rote memorization.

Vision for the Future of Learning

At its core, Practicle is a labor of love. Chong Ming and his wife are product-driven innovators who constantly strive to refine and enhance their platform. Their biggest reward is seeing students improve their grades, gain confidence, and develop a love for learning.

With the continued advancement of AI and digital learning technologies, the future of education is evolving rapidly. Practicle stands as a shining example of how passion, technology, and innovation can come together to create a transformative learning experience for students everywhere.

As Practicle continues to grow, one thing remains certain: Chong Ming’s mission to make learning mathematics more accessible, effective, and enjoyable will only keep getting stronger.

  • Krystal Wee’s Journey in Food Powders & Hair Tinsel

Krystal Wee’s Journey in Food Powders & Hair Tinsel

Mother founded two brands from caring for her daughter.

Meet Krystal Wee (and her family!)

Krystal’s spouse (on the left), daughter (in the middle), and Krystal (on the right)

Krystal Wee is officially a housewife, but in reality, she manages two thriving home-based businesses: one focused on food powders and the other on hair tinsel.

With her naturally nurturing and motherly demeanor, she has a unique ability to care for others in a warm yet authoritative way. Her “aunty-like” nature exudes trustworthiness, as she generously shares her extensive knowledge and experiences, reflecting her wealth of expertise and insights.

P.S. People often mistake Krystal for a young lady in her late 20s—until she starts sharing her insights with the wisdom and flair of a typical Singaporean auntie!

What is Food Powder and Hair Tinsel?

    Adding food powder to food
    Hair tinsel amidst organic hair

Food powder and hair tinsel may seem worlds apart, but both are innovative solutions designed to enhance everyday life in unique ways.

Food powder is a finely ground blend of natural ingredients, such as dehydrated vegetables, herbs, and proteins, used as a healthy alternative to traditional seasonings. Free from preservatives and artificial additives, it delivers pure flavors and nutrients, making it ideal for soups, stews, porridges, and more. Krystal’s food powders stand out as a wholesome replacement for salt and artificial seasonings, ensuring families enjoy delicious and nutritious meals.

Hair tinsel, on the other hand, is a shimmering strand tied onto individual hairs to add sparkle and flair. Made from heat-resistant, durable materials, it’s a versatile accessory that blends seamlessly with natural hair and can be styled, washed, and treated like regular hair. Krystal’s high-quality hair tinsel allows individuals to elevate their look effortlessly, bringing a touch of glamour and individuality to any hairstyle.

How did Krystal get into Food Powder and Hair Tinsel?

Like many devoted mothers, Krystal Wee wanted to provide the best for her daughter, especially a nutritious diet during her infant years.

She noticed that most flavorful foods rely heavily on salt and artificial seasonings, which are widely recognized as unhealthy. Excessive salt intake has been linked to high blood pressure, heart disease, and kidney issues, while artificial seasonings often contain additives like monosodium glutamate (MSG), which some studies suggest may contribute to headaches, nausea, and other health concerns in sensitive individuals.

Driven by her desire to give her daughter wholesome meals, Krystal developed her own line of Healthy Signature Food Powders as a natural alternative to salt and artificial seasonings. Her mission was simple: to ensure her daughter eats well and grows strong without compromising on flavor or nutrition.

Krystal Wee’s venture into hair tinsel was born later, from a personal discovery. As someone who loves helping others feel their best, she found that hair tinsel was a simple yet impactful way to add fun, glamour, and individuality to any hairstyle. Recognizing the growing demand for this unique accessory, she began crafting her own high-quality tinsel products, sharing her passion for sparkle with others.

    From Passion to Business

Krystal Wee’s journey began with a desire to provide healthier options for her family. Concerned about artificial ingredients, she created her own line of food powders and later expanded into hair tinsel, driven by a love for creative expression.

What started as a personal mission quickly grew into a business when Krystal saw the positive impact her products had on others. She realized there was a demand for healthier, more creative alternatives.

Today, her passion fuels a thriving business, where Krystal continues to share her products and inspire others to live and express themselves more freely.

    Juggling Motherhood and Business

Endearing photo of Krystal and her daughter

Being both a mother and an entrepreneur is no easy feat, and Krystal Wee embodies the challenges and rewards of this dual role. Every day, she navigates the delicate balance between nurturing her family and managing two thriving home-based businesses. From preparing meals and spending quality time with her daughter to crafting her signature food powders and perfecting her hair tinsel products, Krystal’s days are a whirlwind of activity. Yet, it is her unwavering determination and love for her family that drive her to excel in both areas.

While the journey is demanding, it also brings a deep sense of fulfillment. As a mother, Krystal cherishes the opportunity to create products that reflect her values—healthy, wholesome food for families and creative tools for self-expression. Her ability to adapt, prioritize, and stay focused showcases her resilience. Through her struggles, Krystal inspires others to pursue their passions while remaining deeply committed to the people who matter most.

    The Heart Behind Krystal’s Hustle

For Krystal Wee, her family is at the core of everything she does. As a mother, her primary goal has always been to provide the best for her daughter, from wholesome meals during infancy to creating a nurturing environment for growth. This desire to care for her family sparked her entrepreneurial journey, leading her to develop healthy food powders and hair tinsel products that reflect her values of love, creativity, and quality.

Despite the challenges of juggling motherhood and business, Krystal’s passion fuels her resilience. This Couple founded DoDo’s Sourdough

    Meet DoDo’s – a home-based sourdough business/project of a whimsical couple.

    Getting to Know DoDo’s Creators

Bao (on the left), Mathan (on the right) with their sourdough

DoDo’s Sourdough was founded by Mathan—a teacher at a top enrichment provider—and Bao, a business executive in the manufacturing sector. The couple met online nearly five years ago through a dating app, and their bond has only grown stronger over the years.

Word has it that Mathan stole Bao’s heart on their first date with a delicious home-cooked meal that left quite an impression!

Both Mathan and Bao are devoted food lovers. They live to eat, always seeking out high-quality, nutritious food. Their shared passion for cooking and eating eventually led them to launch DoDo’s in May 2024, bringing their love for good food to others.

    What does DoDo’s mean?

“DoDo” is a playful term Mathan and Bao coined as a fancy way of saying “dumb dumb.” It’s become their go-to way of teasingly calling each other out for silly moments.

For example: “Gosh, you’re such a DoDo for leaving our rugs at the restaurant!”

The term is so ingrained in their everyday lives that when it came time to name their sourdough business, they went with “DoDo’s.”

To add a unique touch to their brand, they also decided to include some illustrations of DoDo birds on their menu as a fun tribute.

    Why sourdough over other foods?

Bao has always been intrigued by the transformative magic of fermentation, which can elevate simple ingredients into extraordinary flavours while enhancing their nutritional value.

His culinary adventures have led him to boldly experiment with various fermented creations, including lacto-fermented garlic scapes, honey fermented garlic, and even his own jar of miso made with live cultures (i.e. Koji) imported from Japan.

    Bao’s lacto-fermented garlic scapes

In early 2024, Bao stumbled upon some inspiring sourdough videos online and felt compelled to dive into the world of sourdough fermentation. Instead of using the usual plain wheat flour for his starter, he decided to experiment with the ancient grain: Ragi (an ancient grain from the highlands of Eastern Africa), which had been sitting underutilised in his pantry.

Bao also shared that weekend brunches with Mathan are a cherished ritual, usually featuring a slice of toasted homemade sourdough topped with poached eggs, along with fresh fruits and a steaming cup of coffee.

This simple yet satisfying meal perfectly captures their ideal way to kick off the weekend. Having the ability to prepare a fresh loaf of homemade sourdough is the cherry on top, enhancing their brunch experience.

Through this journey, he not only delves into the art of fermentation but also enriches his culinary repertoire with unique flavours and healthier options for friends and family.

The Birth of Ravi: The Sourdough Starter

The journey to perfect sourdough wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows for Mathan and Bao.

Their first attempts at baking sourdough were far from perfect. They faced issues with underbaking, overbaking, and practically every other mistake you can make when learning the craft.

Through trial and error, they experimented with several sourdough starters and baking methods. With each new attempt, they learned valuable lessons and improved their technique.

Finally, after numerous iterations, they managed to bake sourdough loaves that met their high standards. They named the starter responsible for these perfect loaves “Ravi,” inspired by the Ragi (an ancient grain from the highlands of Eastern Africa) they used to create it.

Ravi the Ragi (finger millet) sourdough starter

This marked the beginning of their successful sourdough journey.

    Turning Passion into Profit

Mathan and Bao initially baked sourdough bread just for themselves—selling it had never crossed their minds.

That all changed one day when Mathan brought some of their homemade sourdough loaves to his office. The bread was a huge hit with his colleagues, and one of them asked, “Have you ever thought about selling these?” That question sparked the idea for a home-based sourdough business.

Starting a sourdough business, however, would require more than just baking skills. Mathan and Bao knew they’d also need to learn about sales and marketing. They took their first step by listing their sourdough loaves on Carousell, and after a quiet start, they finally made their first sale to a middle-aged woman. That first sale was a boost of confidence, proving their business idea could work.

Eager to build on this success, they used Canva to design a custom menu for DoDo’s Sourdough. Soon after, they launched an Instagram page to start connecting with a wider audience and sharing their passion for artisanal sourdough bread.

Running a Sourdough Business: A Look Behind the Scenes

With both Mathan and Bao working full-time jobs, their only available hours for the sourdough business are early in the morning or late at night after work.

One evening, I had the chance to join them (for dinner) and observe their routine.

Each day, Mathan and Bao check for new orders. When orders come in, they “feed” Ravi (their original sourdough starter) and his “descendants” so they’re ready to rise by the time the couple returns home.

After work, they gather in the kitchen, organize their equipment, and start prepping the orders. Using the exact starter amounts needed, which they now know by heart from countless trials, they combine it with other ingredients based on each order’s flavor.

Once mixed, the dough rests to bubble and ferment. The fermentation time varies depending on the environment, particularly temperature and humidity. They carefully manage this by turning on the air conditioning away from the resting dough, creating a warm and humid microenvironment for faster fermentation.

When ready, they knead the dough into shape or add additional ingredients for flavored varieties. After shaping, it’s straight into the oven. Once baked, they pack the loaves neatly into paper bags or slice them, depending on the customer’s request.

Watching Mathan and Bao work with such precision and care shows the dedication they pour into each loaf of DoDo’s sourdough.

Time to Indulge in the Sourdough

As I watched them prepare the food, the table was neatly arranged—simple yet inviting, perfectly complementing the meal ahead.

I was served their classic rustic sourdough, accompanied by a comforting bowl of soup and a rich, savory miso garlic butter.

The meal was undeniably delicious, though not in the indulgent way you’d expect from fast food like KFC or McDonald’s. It was flavorful yet light, satisfying without feeling heavy. The absence of frying or oils seemed to keep my appetite alive, making each bite more enjoyable.

Mathan and Bao explained that sourdough is easier to digest due to its beneficial bacteria. Paired with the organic ingredients and minimal seasoning in the soup and miso garlic butter, it was no wonder I could eat so much without feeling bloated.

By the end, I surprised myself by finishing half a loaf of their rustic sourdough on my own.

My sourdough before I consumed half of it.

Beyond Sourdough: Other Delights on DoDo’s Menu

While the sourdough process takes center stage, Mathan and Bao also offer a range of delicious sides to complement their loaves.

Customers can elevate their experience with flavorful additions like hummus and spicy Léilàjiāo dips, or enjoy comforting soups such as French Onion or Cream of Miso Pumpkin.

For an extra burst of flavor, a selection of artisanal butters—like Masala Chai and Gochujang—adds a unique twist to every bite.

Crafting the DoDo’s Experience: The Art Behind Every Loaf

For Mathan and Bao, the packaging is just as meaningful as the sourdough itself.

They dedicate considerable time and effort to designing the artwork for their packaging and marketing materials, including their menu. Each design is thoughtfully crafted, with a unique story or meaning behind it.

They carefully consider whether customers will understand, relate to, and ultimately appreciate the artwork, making sure each design enhances the overall experience of DoDo’s Sourdough.

Customer Spotlights: Stories from Dodo’s Fans

It’s no wonder their customers consistently sing their praises.

P.S. On my way home, I let my phone battery die and knocked out on the bus, worrying my loved ones in the process. Am I becoming a dodo too? Must be something in the bread.

  • New China Opticians turns century old in 2025

New China Opticians turns century old in 2025

New China Opticians “大明眼镜” celebrates their 100th year anniversary come 2025.

    Origin of New China Opticians

The first New China Optician (NCO) “大明眼镜” branch in Singapore was founded by Senior Fang in 1925, who came from Shanghai, China.

Although the first NCO store did not survive the second world war (1939 – 45), the business was later revived thanks to Senior Fang’s connection with the Shaw Brothers.

After World War II, the Shaw Brothers acquired the Capitol Building (later renamed Shaw Building) and provided Senior Fang with store space to restart his business. Eventually, the business was passed down to his son, Fang Pao Nien (Mr. Fang).

NCO thrived due to its prime location and the connections of Senior Fang’s other son, Professor Fang, who pursued a successful career in healthcare, rising to a prominent role at Singapore General Hospital.

Professor Fang introduced many high-profile clients to NCO, including Singapore’s first two presidents, Yusof Ishak and Benjamin Sheares. These VIP customers appreciated the convenience of the store, as they could park their cars directly outside.

Mr. Fang’s Fateful Meeting with Uncle Tony

Uncle Tony, the current owner of NCO, began his career in optometry at the age of 16 in 1965, apprenticing under Mr. Lee, who owned a spectacle shop in Sabah, Malaysia.

In 1971, Uncle Tony returned to Singapore and took a sales role with Ning Kwong Optical (NWO). During this time, he met Mr. Fang, as NCO was one of NWO’s customers.

Between 1971 and 2004, Uncle Tony moved between different companies, started his own business, faced financial challenges that led to its closure, and eventually joined another firm. Throughout these years, he and Mr. Fang remained in touch, forming a close friendship over time.

Uncle Tony (on the left) and Mr. Fang (in between the two gentlemen)

In 2004, during a visit to Mr. Fang’s store, Uncle Tony noticed a “closing sales” banner at the storefront. He soon discovered that Mr. Fang’s vision had deteriorated, preventing him from continuing to run NCO.

In response, Uncle Tony offered to buy the business and continue operating it as NCO. Mr. Fang agreed, and the business was transferred to Uncle Tony.

Uncle Tony takes over New China Optician

Upon taking over New China Optician in 2004, Uncle Tony relocated the store to Level B1 of Peninsula Shopping Centre.

Although the early years were challenging, the business eventually gained momentum, thanks to its existing customer base. To drive further growth, Uncle Tony shifted the strategy to focus on offering middle-to-lower-end spectacles, as many of the older, high-spending customers were gradually passing away.

The business also expanded its offerings by promoting bespoke and customized spectacles, which attracted premium customers, including Joanne Peh and Michelle Chong.

In 2014, NCO moved to a more favorable location on Level 1 of the same building, positioning the store for continued success.

    New China Optician in 2024

Currently, New China Optician is managed by Uncle Tony and his family. As Uncle Tony ages, he is preparing to pass the business on to his son, Gao Ming.

Like many young people, Gao Ming was unsure of his career path after graduating from secondary school. With the optical industry appearing promising and his family owning a successful spectacle store, he decided to pursue a diploma and later a degree in Optometry.

Since earning his degree, Gao Ming has been working at the shop since 2021, learning the business from his father. It took him 18 months to fully integrate into the role, during which he not only mastered the daily operations of an optometry retail store but also gained valuable insights into how the business has been managed under Uncle Tony’s leadership.

Gao Ming (on the right) attending to a customer

Additionally, Gao Ming has traveled to China several times to attend major optical industry events, such as The China International Optics Fair, where he expanded his knowledge of the field and sourced suppliers for the business.

He has already established connections with several contacts during the industry events, and is now bringing in new frames from mainland China.

    Vintage Frames and Personalized Service

With a history dating back to 1925, New China Optician (NCO) has accumulated a unique collection of vintage frames that are no longer in production. These rare frames have become highly sought after by collectors and customers who prefer a retro aesthetic for their spectacles.

One of the key reasons NCO has thrived for nearly a century is its strong focus on personalized service. The staff are skilled in building lasting relationships with customers, who often feel more like friends than clients. Many regulars visit the store not just for eyewear, but also to engage in friendly conversation, reflecting NCO’s community-centered approach to business.

Uncle Tony with one of his longstanding customer – Mr. James Chua

    Outlook for the Optometry Industry

Gao Ming has conducted thorough market research on the future of the optometry industry. His findings show that myopia is on the rise globally. A recent study estimates that around 30% of the world’s population is currently myopic, and by 2050, nearly 50%—approximately 5 billion people—will be affected. The highest rates of myopia are found in East and Southeast Asia, with countries like South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, China, and Japan reporting prevalence rates of 80% to 90%. Even in the USA, myopia rates have surged to 42%, nearly doubling in the past three decades (Myopia Institute).

With this growing trend, the demand for prescription eyewear will continue to rise, ensuring that spectacles remain a vital product in the future.

Business Challenges for New China Optician

Over the last three years, Gao Ming has observed that most of New China Optician’s regular customers are loyal to the business because of Uncle Tony’s longstanding relationships. New customers have primarily been generated through word-of-mouth referrals, which raises concerns for Gao Ming as he contemplates how to retain these loyal customers once Uncle Tony retires.

The two main challenges NCO faces are:

    • Finding effective ways to attract new customers to sustain business growth.
    • The gradual decline in regular customers due to aging, and the uncertainty of whether their children will continue to purchase from NCO.

    Utilizing Digital Marketing Moving Foward

Recognizing that Uncle Tony’s exceptional sales skills and customer loyalty are not easily scalable, Gao Ming has turned to digital marketing to reach a broader audience. He took a course on using TikTok for marketing and launched an account for NCO. TikTok’s ability to reach non-followers appealed to him, and he successfully attracted a few new clients through this platform.

However, consistently creating content for TikTok has been mentally draining for Gao Ming, especially since he can only focus on it after business hours, as his time during the day is consumed by running the store.

To address this, NCO is now looking to hire staff to manage daily retail operations, freeing up Gao Ming to focus on business management, diversifying services, and exploring new marketing channels.
